The 280 SL was a huge success for Mercedes, which isn’t at all surprising given the jaw dropping looks. Initially introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show some 24,000 were produced.
To totally restore the car back to its former glory for regular hire use in the South of France.
To the untrained eye, this example presented reasonably well, It was until we completely stripped the car back to bare metal and acid dipped the complete body which revealed vast amount of present corrosion and terribly poor previous repairs.
Despite the huge challenge ahead following the realisation of the recently revealed condition of this 280 SL, we got to work. Much like other restorations we carry out, new and handcrafted panels were fitted to the areas not saveable and all previous poor repairs were cut out and replaced. The complete drive train, suspension and brakes were rebuilt here in house.
Now complete and thoroughly enjoying its life in the South of France, providing joy to those who can get the chance to get behind the wheel of this stunning machine. This isn’t the first Mercedes we have restored, and we hope not the last as it is always a pleasure.
